Web design across Tyne and Wear

Five boroughs, about 1.1 million people and five quite different search markets. If your business covers more than one of them, the site has to rank in each rather than averaging them out and ranking in none.

Doing business in Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear is an administrative label rather than a place people search for. Almost nobody types it. They type the town, which is why multi area businesses need a structure rather than a single page.

Newcastle

The densest and most competitive market, with district level searching that is far more winnable than city terms.

Gateshead

Heavily B2B thanks to Team Valley, plus retail competing with the Metrocentre and a cultural quarter on the Quays.

Sunderland

A separate city with its own identity, its own coast and a business park economy out at Doxford.

North Tyneside

Coastal towns, a large residential population and a professional cluster at Cobalt. Strong local loyalty.

South Tyneside

A cluster of distinct towns from South Shields through Jarrow and Hebburn, each with its own catchment.

The river as a boundary

North and south of the Tyne behave like separate markets. Businesses on one side have to work harder to be found on the other.

What goes wrong for Tyne and Wear businesses online

Multi area businesses ring us when the enquiries have plateaued and nobody can work out why, which is almost always a structure problem rather than a design one.

One page covering everywhere ranks nowhere

The classic mistake. A page listing twenty towns is too thin to rank for any of them, and reads as spam to both Google and customers.

You cannot say how far you travel

Vague service areas generate enquiries you have to turn down and miss the ones you want. Being specific filters better than it limits.

Your location pages are find and replaced

Duplicated pages with the town name swapped get filtered out of results, and sometimes drag the rest of the site with them.

You treat five boroughs as one audience

What sells in Team Valley is not what sells on Ocean Road. Tone, proof and calls to action all need to change by area.

What we know about trading in Tyne and Wear

Local knowledge is not a line on a web page. It changes what goes on the site.

  • Nobody searches Tyne and Wear. They search Gosforth, Whitley Bay, Washington or Jarrow. Build for the town, not the county.
  • Service crossed with location is the structure. A page for each service in each key town, linked sensibly. Done badly it is spam, done properly it is how trades dominate a region.
  • Six real pages beat twenty thin ones. Quality is the ranking factor. We will tell you which six are worth writing.
  • The Metro defines realistic catchment. Customers will travel along the line for the right business, which widens who you can serve.
  • Each area needs local proof. A job in Jarrow sells to Jarrow. Area specific photographs and reviews outperform a generic gallery.
  • Your Google profile targets one point. The profile radiates from one address. Location pages are how you reach the areas it does not cover.

How we work, from first call to launch

Four steps, with an extra piece of work at the proposal stage to decide exactly which areas are worth building pages for.

1

Discovery call

Thirty minutes on your business and where the work actually comes from now, which is usually not where you think.

2

Proposal and plan

A written proposal with the full page structure: which services, which areas, and which combinations are worth building. This is the important bit.

3

Design and build

Built on a private staging link, with the area pages written individually rather than duplicated from a template.

4

Launch and handover

Go live with everything in your name, then ongoing SEO to build the area pages out as the first ones start ranking.

Questions we get asked in Tyne and Wear

How many location pages do I actually need?

One for each place you genuinely want work from, and no more. Twenty thin pages hurt you. Six properly written ones that answer local questions will do far more, and we will tell you which six.

Which parts of Tyne and Wear do you cover?

All five boroughs: Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. Most of our clients are in towns like North Shields, Whitley Bay, Wallsend, South Shields, Jarrow, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring, and many of them have a page of their own on this site.

Will duplicate location pages get me penalised?

Not penalised exactly, but filtered, which amounts to the same thing. Near identical pages get dropped from results and can weaken the rest of the site.

Should I have one site or several?

One site, almost always. Several thin sites split your authority and multiply the maintenance. A single strong site with proper area pages outperforms three weak ones.

Can I rank across all five boroughs?

For local map results, only near where you are based, which is how Google works. For ordinary search results, yes, with a page per area and the content to support it.

Do you cover the whole county?

Yes, and we have clients in all five boroughs. Being in North Shields puts us within half an hour of nearly all of it.

What if I only want work close to home?

Then we build for that and say so clearly on the site. Tight targeting means fewer wasted enquiries and better quality ones.
